There’s no getting around it: It’s hot, Dallas.
Dallas is preparing for another week of hot weather. With temperatures hovering around 100°, we’re staying inside and looking back at some of the headlines on the hottest days we’ve had here in the metroplex.
The day the heat set records
Dallas’s hottest day on record took place on Aug. 18, 1909, when temperatures hit a record-breaking 115°.
That sure puts this weather in perspective, huh? The closest we’ve come to that temperature in the past few weeks was when temps reached 104° on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
What the headlines said
So, what else was going on in Dallas on the hottest day on record? We weren’t able to find an article for Aug. 18, but we did find one just a few days later, on Friday, Aug. 20, 1909.
On that day, one of the city’s biggest pieces of news was about Hon H. Bascom Thomas, who was re-elected to the State Senate after being expelled from his seat., the Texas Mesquiter newspaper reported.
The paper also covered the intense weather: An ad posted by The Mesquite Pharmacy used the heat as a selling point. “If the heat makes you hot, come to our soda fountain and cool off with some of our cold drinks or ice cream. If it makes you sick, come to us for your medicine,” the ad read.
