Popular Indian dishes featured at an Irving restaurant have found themselves on the NY Times’ America’s Best Restaurant list. Simply South cooks up vegetarian southern Indian dishes that bring Dallas residents a taste from around the globe. Since opening in the DFW area in February 2024, the restaurant has already made a name for itself.

Nestled in the home of a former Tex-Mex restaurant on I-635, chefs Venkatesawara Rao Muttavarapu, Manikandan Ramalingam, and Anoop Muraleedhara have made it their mission to bring their Indian culinary techniques and spices to the Irving landscape.

The NY Times’ list of restaurants was curated by editors and food reporters who traveled to nearly every state looking for restaurants with refined menus. This year, restaurant interiors and seating factored into which eateries were selected. When it comes to Simply South, the restaurant is very spacious with both indoor and outdoor seating choices.

The restaurant specializes in rice dishes, southern Indian entrees, vegetarian fried rice, and traditional beverages.

Getting hungry? Some popular dishes include:
  • Paneer Chettinad
  • Gongura Daal
  • Jackfruit Dum Pulao
  • Chilli Garlic Fried Rice
For now, the restaurant only has one location in Irving, but plans are underway to open two other locations: one in Frisco and the other in Illinois.

Whether you take I-35 to work or live in the area, you have definitely seen the famous billboard with a waterfall in the middle. It’s hard to miss it. Well, what’s the history behind the intriguing and famous billboard?

Standing 45 ff tall, the billboard has overlooked Dallasites for over 50 years. Constructed in 1962 for Pearl Brewing Company, the waterfall billboard was originally located on Goat Hill, a small park close to I-35 north of Downtown Dallas. Tracy-Locke Co., a nearby advertising agency, created the design. The beer sign was the biggest in the world at the time.

Today, it features the Coors Brewing company logo and over 1.5 million gallons of water flow over the man-made rocks in the billboard each day. The billboard has been used for various advertisements for beer and tobacco products over the years.
