A very important day in Texas’ history is right around the corner — Juneteenth is on Thursday, June 19.
There’s a lot happening in Dallas to commemorate the day. Here are some ways you can join.
Dallas MLK Freedom Walk | Saturday, June 14
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center is hosting this festival that begins with a 4K Freedom Walk for wellness and wraps up with a community festival featuring live music, vendors, and family-friendly activities.
Fifth Annual Dallas Juneteenth Food Festival | Sunday, June 15
Expect not only heaping dishes of pork chops, barbecue, and greens, but look for several vendors throughout the festival.
Opal’s Walk for Freedom | Thursday, June 19
Join the Grandmother of Juneteenth, Opal Lee, on her annual walk that’s directly responsible for the day becoming recognized as a federal holiday. You’ll take a 2.5 mile trek, representing the two years and five months it took news of freedom to reach enslaved people in Galveston.

Plans to build a new practice facility for the Dallas Wings are taking flight — Dallas City Council approved a use and $19 million incentives agreement for its construction on North Cockrell Hill Road. Renderings of the $55 million build include two practice courts, locker rooms, a strength + conditioning area, and family rooms. (Dallas Morning News)

Dallas has its first 2026 World Cup sponsor: Coca-Cola Southwest. The company — which distributes bottled drinks to folks across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and New Mexico — signed on through FIFA’s host supporter program. Each city is responsible for paying for its own security, transportation, fan festivities, and infrastructure. (Dallas Business Journal)
Development
A new 1,500-acre, 2,400+-home community is being planned for Terrell. In addition to its mass living areas, Terra Nova will include 112 acres of commercial space and 145 acres of parks and trails. Its developer Main Square Development also plans to invest ~$110 million intro traffic infrastructure. (Dallas Business Journal)

Celebrity-owned pizza chain Pizzana is opening a second Dallas-area location this fall. Located inside the Preston Forest Shopping Center, the new restaurant will feature the chain’s well known 48-hour fermented dough. No exact opening date has been announced. (CultureMap Dallas)
Weather
Stay safe, Dallas. A flood watch is in effect for large portions of DFW until at least tonight after a surge of storms swept through our area. WFAA meteorologist Pete Delkus has more on what you can expect through the coming days.
Older Adults
Dallas City Council recently approved a new property tax exemption for local seniors and those who are disabled. The legislation, which will apply to the 2025 tax year, reduces the taxable value of a home by $175,000. (CultureMap Dallas)

Oh deer. North Texan Chris Olguin recently saved a baby deer from Lake Lewisville after he noticed it separated from its mother and struggling to stay above water. He scooped the fawn onto his boat and was able to successfully reunite it with its mother after feeding it a bit of corn Olguin keeps as fish bait. (WFAA)
