*Cue* “The stars at night...”
Election season is finally here, and what better way to show your Texas pride than by making sure your voice is heard? Here is some history about the state, before you hit the polls.
Texas was established as the 28th state in the United States on December 29, 1845.
Since then, pride has become abundant for many Texans. Learn more about our state history with this breakdown on our state flag.
Founded
It’s unknown who created the original Lone Star Flag that we know today. But we do know that the official flag of Texas went through many versions before being adopted by the Third Congress of the Republic of Texas in Houston on January 25, 1839.
The colors
When you see what the colors of the Texas flag represent it’s very easy to understand why it’s just... so Texas. The Texas flag shares its colors with the US flag, and their meanings are identical:
Red for courage
White for purity and liberty
Blue for loyalty
The star
At the hoist end of the Texas flag — that is, the end near the flagstaff — a blue stripe bears the iconic Lone Star.
The current Lone Star flag was adopted in 1839, but the symbol represented Texan unity and independence for decades before. The Jane Long Flag flown in 1819 may have been the star’s debut.
The field
Our flag’s background borrows its parallel stripes from the Republic of Fredonia, representing an alliance between the settlers and local Cherokee leaders, according to the Texas Historical Society.
Although the Fredonian Rebellion was unsuccessful, it set the stage for the Texas Revolution a decade later.

Dallas as an ice cream flavor
Vegan soft serve lovers, yes, we want to hear from you too. | Photo via DALtoday
Calling all lovers of Dallas. Even though it’s the fall season, the upcoming high temperatures have us craving ice cream. We want to know — if the Big D was a flavor of ice cream, what would it be?
What local ingredients would it contain? Would it be filled with globs of chocolate like a rocky road representing our roads in Dallas, or would it have a local touch with cookie dough from Super Duper Cookie Company?
Share your locally inspired ice cream flavor with us by Monday, Nov. 18, and we may feature it in an upcoming newsletter — just make sure it includes one to three local ingredients (bonus points if you list the local spot to source the ingredients and include a catchy name for your frosty concoction).
City Editor Summer and I recently got the chance to visit La Reunion in Bishop Arts. You have to try their espresso martini the next time you’re in the area. A life-changing type of good.
