Back to school resources in Dallas

We have nearly a week and a half left before it’s time for kids to head back to school. Check out these resources for the best school year yet.

Psst — Dallas ISD opens its doors Aug. 12.

Check your registration

Dallas ISD ONE Centers is responsible for supporting and overseeing the District’s initiatives, registration, and enrollment procedures, which include student transfers, lottery, and waitlists.

Back to school supplies events

Dallas ISD with Mayor Eric Johnson will be hosting a free back-to-school supplies event on Friday, Aug. 2 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families are required to register for the event, which will be held at the Fair Park Centennial and Automobile Buildings.

Venture X Braniff, 7701 Lemmon Ave., will also host their Back to School Bash on Saturday, Aug. 3. The free supplies event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free haircuts, food, and snow cones will also be available at this event.

Oak Cliff will also host a back-to-school event for school supplies. For Oak Cliff Back to School Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 907 E. Ledbetter Dr. Enjoy free food, a job and college fair, and live music. Families that attend will have a chance to receive free backpacks and school supplies.

Immunization

Students must have updated vaccinations for the new school year. Dallas County Health and Human Services offers vaccinations to children 18 or younger who are eligible for the Texas Vaccine for Children program. Find a clinic near you.

  • Pool Story Time | Wednesday, July 31 | 11-11:30 a.m. | Holmes Aquatics Center 3501 Lovers Lane, University Park |Free | Make a big splash in summer reading with swimming, stories, and songs geared toward ages 5 and under.

Edu
  • Dallas ISD and Richardson ISD are hoping limiting cell phones in the classroom will lead to greater learning outcomes. Both districts have announced they will be implementing locked phone pouches for students during the new school year. (Dallas Observer)
Development
  • The RedBird Mall redevelopment will feature a 50,000-square-foot Tom Thumb grocery store. Construction is expected to begin in September. It is estimated that it will be a $7.75 million project. (Dallas Business Journal)
Olympics
  • The 2024 Summer Olympics are happening now in Paris, France. Keep up with Team USA and some of our favorite local athletes, like Scottie Scheffler, via WFAA. Today’s events include golf, long jump + rhythmic gymnastics — starting at 8 a.m. CT.
Coming Soon
  • MiYa will soon be home to 9540 Garland Rd. inside Dallas’ Casa Linda Plaza. Their menu, website, and and social media channels have not gone live yet. However, the restaurant is set to open in February 2025. (What Now DFW)
Announced
  • A new youth sports complex is coming to Roanoke. The 122-acre sports complex will feature five baseball diamonds and three soccer fields. The project is estimated to cost from $60 million to $70 million, according to the developer, 114 Development Group. (Dallas Business Journal)

  • $762,090. This is the salary you would have in 2024 in order to be considered part of the top one percent, according to a new study.

    Dallas Finalists

    • Encina is a Dallas-based vegetarian restaurant known for its fresh local ingredients. Their Blue Corn Butterscotch Pancake Mix has made the cut as a finalist on the list.
    • Emiliano Espinosa-Dominguez is the creator behind HydroN Natural Sports Drinks. The young entrepreneur wanted to create an energy drink that paid homage to his family’s favorite drinks.
    • Marasi Foods specializes in naan. Owners Saemae Hoda and Shabaz Sohail are finalists for their frozen-filled naan bread. The brand is known for its fresh, high-quality, and delicious spices.
    • Friends and mothers Jazmin Miranda + Roxana Ventura created Sarape Treats with a goal in mind: to represent Hispanic culture through their high-quality chamoy paste made with real fruit.
