Dallas-Fort Worth Airport opens runway for 5K to celebrate 50th anniversary

DFW Airport is bringing a new meaning to “runway” during its 5K in October.

The Dallas-Fort Worth 5K is a race on Saturday, Oct. 5 where runners and walkers will take to the tarmac to race (safely) alongside airplanes taking off. Registration starts at $75, and participants will receive a t-shirt + a commemorative medal.

While the airport has hosted previous 5Ks, this one is special because it celebrates DFW’s 50th anniversary. When it opened in 1974, it was the biggest airport in the world. Since then, it still stands as one of the most visited airports in the world, transporting and welcoming 73+ million visitors each year.

Worried about your flight that day? The airport assured travelers that flight plans will not be impacted by the race. Dallas News reports one runway will be closed, meaning the other six will be fully operating.
