Calling all lovers of the outdoors. Southern Gateway Park is coming to south Dallas.

The deck park will span across I-35 East between Ewing Avenue and Marsalis Avenue. It will sit adjacent to the Dallas Zoo and reconnect Oak Cliff where the freeway originally cut between the neighborhood. The park was designed to support a similar infrastructure like Dallas’ Klyde Warren Park.

Phase one of the park’s development will stretch from Lancaster Road to Ewing Avenue. It will include features like:
  • A multi-purpose pavilion
  • A large lawn
  • A playground
  • A turnaround for food trucks and drop-offs
Southern Gateway Park in south Dallas will feature several amenities such as this pavilion that allows guests to sit under a cover with some sunlighting

The Southern Gateway Park will feature a pavilion for covered seating.

Southern Gateway Public Green Foundation

According to the Southern Gateway Foundation, the park is the first project of its kind. The design and construction costs for the overlaying deck park are estimated at $65 million.
The park is a public/private project between the City of Dallas, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG), the Texas Department of Transportation, and the Southern Gateway Public Green Foundation.

The Gateway Park Foundation is tasked with the design, construction, and future operations of the Southern Gateway Park. The foundation is partnering with HKS, Inc. to lead the design and engineering for the deck.

The Texas Department of Transportation completed construction of the deck above the freeway in late 2022. While an exact opening date is yet to be announced, Dallas park-goers can tentatively look forward to 2026 for phase one of Southern Gateway Park’s opening.
