Dallas is home to some of the most famous figures in movies and music. If it were not for the cultural and artistic influence of Dallas and the Lone Star State, we wouldn’t have some of the most vibrant music and talented actors to take pride in.
Here are at least five Dallas alumni who have made an imprint on the world as we know it:
Nick Jonas Known for: Singer-songwriter
Known for being a member of The Jonas Brothers band, Nick Jonas paved his own path in music, earning Grammy and Golden Globe award nominations. He’s known for starring in 2019’s “Jumanji” in addition to his many appearances on Disney Channel and NBC’s “The Voice.”
Owen Wilson Known for: Actor
Owen Wilson was born in Dallas in 1968. He later attended UT Austin to pursue a degree in English, but did not finish. Instead, Wilson went on to star in movies like Walt Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” and “The French Dispatch,” and had collaborations with former roommate and renowned film director Wes Anderson.

Erykah Badu Known for: Singer-songwriter
Born in 1971, Badu brings a mixture of R&B, Neo-Soul, and Jazz to her music. Her February 1997 debut album “Baduizm” won her a Grammy Award for best R&B album in 1997.
Luke Wilson Known for: Actor
Born in Dallas in 1955, Wilson attended St. Mark’s School of Texas. He eventually starred in “That 70’s Show” and films such as “Bottle Rocket,” “Rushmore,” “My Dog Skip,” “Legally Blonde,” “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Old School,” and “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.”
Usher Raymond IV Known For: Singer-songwriter
The singer of the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single “Nice and Slow” and other hits like “U Got It Bad” and “My Way” is also from Dallas. Though Usher was born here, his family moved to Atlanta, GA in 1990.

Wednesday, July 3
The GEMS Camp Club Experience | Wednesday, July 3-Thursday, Feb. 6 | 4-7 p.m. | The DEC, 311 North Market St., Dallas | Free | Girls grade 6th-8th will have a blast exploring coding, public speaking, podcasting, academic training, and so much more.
Shoppers at Preston Center can look forward to two new high rises, which will include new office space, 180 multifamily units, and ground floor retail. The city council approved the 265,000 sqft project, which will also include affordable units within the residential space. (The Dallas Business Journal)
Development
A new 35-acre district called Prosper Arts is coming to the northwest corner of Dallas North Tollway and Prosper Trail. The development will feature shopping, green space, a sports-focused hotel, and multifamily units. Construction for the development will start late 2024. (BisNow)
Edu
Dallas ISD school board voted 7-0 to approve a new student code of conduct initiative for misbehaving students. Students who get in trouble will take six hours of Saturday school or community service while parents take a three-hour parenting class. (WFAA)
Weather
Some neighborhoods in Dallas are still dealing with debris from the May 28 severe storms. City sanitation picked up over 400,000 cubic yards of debris, but more is still left. (Dallas Observer)
Real Estate
Dallas has its own White House. It will just cost you over $40 million. The “White House of Dallas” in Preston Hollow was built in 1996, covers over 18,000 sqft, and has six bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and four partial baths. The designer of the home is Dallas architect Robbie Fusch. (The Dallas Morning News)
Community
Oak Cliff teacher Kristan Taylor created a new poetry game called Stanzaz to make poetry fun and interactive. The game makes the players into poets and editors. The objective is to get as many poetic lines out as possible to beat the game. (The Advocate)
