Just how bad is the traffic in Dallas?

Forget ghosts and ghouls, DFW traffic might be the scariest thing you’ll face this Halloween. Commuters lost an average of 69 hours to congestion in 2024, according to a new Texas A&M report — up 4% from last year.

By the numbers

According to a recent report from Texas A&M Transportation Institute, a trip that would take 20 minutes without traffic takes...

26 minutes with traffic
28 minutes in the peak direction
36 minutes to plan for a punctual arrival

When is the worst time to drive?

Traffic is at its worst between 4 and 5 p.m. on weekdays. In the morning, 7-8 a.m. can also be dicey.

But the hands-down worst time to commute? 4 p.m. on a Friday. 3.2% of the area’s weekly delay happens around then.

When is the best time to drive?

Technically, that would be around midnight. But if you work a nine-to-five, here’s our advice:

Head to work by 7 a.m. or wait until 9 a.m.
If you can leave work early, head out by 3 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 2 p.m. on Fridays.
If your boss is watching, you’ll need to stay at your desk until at least 6 p.m. Or grab a nearby bite from a happy hour spot, and wait out the traffic until 7 p.m.

What about public transit?

Bus, rail, or streetcar — pick your ride. At least you aren’t footing the gas bill.

Bicycling is also a great option. Good for traffic congestion... and your calves.

Dallas is traveling to France at its newest restaurant serving Michelin Star dishes in a casual setting. Stop by Mamani on Tuesday, Sept. 2 for its opening day to try offerings form its “refined bistro” menu.

JW Steakhouse, 800 N. Hardwood St. | Steak
A new steakhouse is now open on the 11th floor of the Marriott in downtown Dallas featuring a fusion menu of Texas dry-aged steaks that also pull inspiration from Hispanic and Asian cultures. Bonus: It has a wraparound view of the city for those perfect date night photos.

The stylish bar and restaurant is the latest concept from the team behind local hotspots like High Fives, Tiny Victories, and Double D’s. On the menu, we’re excited to try the Orange Julius cocktail, the pretzel calamari, and the beef tartare.

Cris and John, 6090 Campbell Rd., Ste. #136 | Vietnamese-Mexican
Cris & John’s new space has entered its soft opening phase, marking a new era for the eight-year-old restaurant. The fusion eatery recently closed its original location on Preston Oaks Road.

Texano Cocina, 5622 Lemmon Ave. | Tex-Mex
Texano Cocina made its debut in the former El Fenix space at Lemmonwood Shopping Center. The new concept’s menu blends Mexican and Texan flavors, with lunch combos priced between $12 and $14. A patio, expanded menu, and remodeled dining area + bar are also in the works.

Monkey Bar on 9, 1949 N. Stemmons Freeway | Mexican
The folks behind Mi Cocina are opening an extension of the once-secret-ish Monkey Bar with this rooftop hang. Located on top of the Tru by Hilton Dallas Market Center, Monkey Bar on 9 opens Friday, June 13 with tequilas, margaritas, cocktails with fresh-pressed juice, and a variety of snacks.

Sweet Paris Crêperie & Cafe, 8701 W. University Dr. #100, McKinney | Cafe
This chain restaurant’s newest location popped open right here in DFW with its delectable selection of sweet + savory crepes, like the Apple Cinnamon Crème Brûlée and the Chicken Alfredo. The restaurant also does waffles, soups, paninis, and mimosas.

Did you know Dallas is called the Big D?

Gotcha. We’re here for the deep cuts, and there are plenty of interesting factoids to go around.

As connoisseurs of the quirky and unconventional, we put together a list of Dallas’ history, oddest characteristics, and more. Maybe you’ve lived here your whole life and know some of this, or maybe you’ll learn something new.

Either way, these 20 interesting facts will have you winning “Jeopardy!” in no time.

Food

Dallas’ oldest standing restaurant is El Fenix, which claims to be the originator of “Tex-Mex” cuisine. Legend has it that folks still desired American food alongside traditional Mexican dishes, so steaks and fried chicken were just as common as enchiladas.

The frozen margarita machine was invented in Dallas — the world can thank us for that one. It was inspired by 7-Eleven’s slushee machine.

German chocolate is not actually German and Dallas is the reason it’s so popular today. The recipe for German chocolate cake was developed by an English baker named Samuel German in 1852. Then, 100 years later, a Dallasite named “Mrs. George Clay” sent a recipe featuring “Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate” into the Dallas Morning News, where it then became widely popular.

History

Do you know how Dallas got it’s name? That’s a serious question because the jury is out. It’s a bit of a local mystery on how our city was named with some speculating its after former Vice President George Mifflin Dallas, and others suggesting anything from baseball players to Navy-men.

The Dallas Public Library has one of the original copies of the Declaration of Independence (the only one west of the Mississippi River) on display and the First Folio of William Shakespeare’s “Comedies, Histories & Tragedies.”

The modern-day traffic light was created by Dallas inventor Henry “Dad” Garrett in 1937.

Built in 1931, Highland Park Village is the United States’ first planned shopping center.

The Dallas Cowboys have won five Super Bowls and eight conference championships, making them one of the most successful and popular franchises in the NFL.

Sports

Dallas is one of 12 cities in the US that has four major sports teams: Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars, and Rangers.

Investors and NBA league officials were reluctant about starting the Mavericks in Dallas. They feared that the Cowboys + the existence of the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs would deter fans from a Dallas-based basketball squad.

Before the Kansas City Chiefs became the football powerhouses that they are today, they were first the Dallas Texans in the late 1950s to early 1960s.

As of 2024, Forbes Magazine ranked the Dallas Cowboys as the most valuable sports team in the world with a valuation of ~$10.1 billion.

The term “Super Bowl” was famously coined by Dallasite + main founder of the American Football League Lamar Hunt. Inspired by his son’s “Super Ball” toy, the name was intended just as a placeholder until they figured out a better name, but Super Bowl stuck in the media and... well, you know the rest.

Pop culture

Barney the Dinosaur and his TV show “Barney and Friends” were created here in Dallas. Super-dee-duper.

Several celebrities are from Dallas, including: Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Vanilla Ice, the Jonas Brothers, Mark Cuban, Robin Wright, and Sharon Tate.

Movies filmed in Dallas include: “Bottlerocket,” “JFK,” “Walker, Texas Ranger,” “Spy Kids 2,” and “Bonny & Clyde.”

John Bunker Sands Wetland Center
Trek a half-hour southeast of Dallas to this nature center on the East Fork of the Trinity River to see the eagles and other wildlife that call this habitat home. This Dallas Aquatics facility (one of three “Coves” open to the public) makes for an easy, breezy summertime outing. We know small businesses are the heart of our community, so earlier this year, we asked local small businesses to tell us about themselves. They delivered.

We’ll be shining the spotlight on a few of DAL’s small businesses this month, starting with Enid b., a local skincare company with Jamaican roots.

Here’s how Enid b. would describe its business.

What is Enid b.?
I create small-batch skincare products using organic, locally sourced ingredients, drawing inspiration from nature and my Jamaican roots. With a background in art and design, I blend creativity and craftsmanship to make products that truly nourish the skin. My product line includes moisturizers, bar soaps, sugar scrubs, hair oils, and more, using 90-100% organic and some locally sourced ingredients. My products are scented using essential oils, which I love to blend to create my own unique and beloved scents.

How do your Jamaican roots show up in your business?
My Jamaican roots are woven throughout my business in meaningful ways. I grew up watching my grandparents, Fritz and Enid, tend to their homestead in Jamaica, growing food and using herbs as everyday preventative medicine. That early exposure sparked a deep love and understanding of herbs that still guides me today. With Enid b., I incorporate a variety of herbs into my products. In my backyard garden, I grow ingredients like rosemary and sage for formulas such as my Beloved Crown herbal hair oil, made to promote hair health and growth, and my Avocado & Rosemary bar soap. I also cultivate Roselle hibiscus—known as Sorrel in Jamaica—which I use in several product creations. It’s the same vibrant plant we use to make our traditional Jamaican Sorrel Drink, a cherished staple in our culture.

What’s unique about the small business scene in Dallas?
Dallas offers abundant vendor opportunities, reflecting a strong community of locals who intentionally support small businesses and value artisanal, handmade goods in all their forms. I enjoy connecting with customers who attend these events and seeing their appreciation for the work that myself and other artisans create.

What's the deal with that waterfall billboard?

Whether you’re new to Dallas or a long-time local, chances are you’ve seen the famous “waterfall billboard.” It’s hard to miss it.

Standing high at 45 ft tall, the billboard has overlooked Dallasites for more than 50 years. Here are some fast facts about the local landmark:

The billboard was initially constructed for San Antonio’s Pearl Brewing Co. in 1962. At the time, the sign was known as “the biggest beer sign in the US.”
Over the years, this billboard has advertised a range of businesses, including Topo Chico Hard Seltzer, Miller Lite, and Coors. See old photos of advertisements in decades past.
More than 1.5 million gallons of water flow over the artificial waterfall each day.
Rumor has it that college football fans dyed the waterfall orange and red for Texas-OU weekend.
In 2008, the billboard was designated as an “extraordinarily significant sign” by the City of Dallas, ensuring it would remain in place for years to come.

Dallas-based Colossal Bioscience resurrects the dire wolf with adorable success

In case you don’t have any nerdy “Game of Thrones” or Dungeons and Dragons-loving people in your friend group, allow us to break some news for you — the dire wolf has been brought back from extinction by Dallas-based company Colossal Biosciences.

The species, which went extinct about 12,000 years ago, largely inhabited a wide range of habitats in North America (but did stretch down to South American savannas) from grasslands to forested mountain areas. They were carnivores and thought likely to eat larger prey like bison, horses, and potentially mammoths.

The dire wolves are now several months old and living in an undisclosed 2,000-acre habitat. The one in this photo is five months old.

Colossal was able to revive the species via a “Jurassic Park"-esque process using DNA extracted from a dire wolf’s fossilized tooth and inner ear bone found in different parts of the US. They then compared the extracted DNA genomes with close living relatives, and wham — the dire wolf returns.

Colossal created three dire wolves, named Romulus + Remus after the ancient Roman legend and Khaleesi after the “Game of Thrones” heroine. They’re being kept in an undisclosed, 2,000-acre wild habitat in the northern US — that has been certified by the American Humane Society — where there is on-site veterinarian services, husbandry facilities, extreme weather shelters, and a natural den.

But why do all of this? To return the species (and others to come) back into the world’s increasingly less diverse food web and develop the ability to protect keystone species in partnership with conservationist organizations and local Indigenous tribes.

Yes, those are dire wolves sitting on the real life Iron Throne from the TV series “Game of Thrones” while they were here in Dallas. We pledge our fealty immediately.

But since the dire wolf is no longer just a fictional creature, let’s brush up on some other quick facts.

They tend to average 3.4-3.8 ft in height, 5.2-6.1 ft in length, and 130-160 lbs in weight.
The wolves are being fed six lbs of meat and three cups of dry food daily — with increasing whole prey as the wolves mature.
Dire wolves have distinctly enhanced mechanosensory genes that affect their whisker length, ear shape, and their vocalizations.
They also have more pronounced shoulders, a wider head, larger jaws + teeth, and more muscular legs.
They are more closely related to jackals than gray wolves, despite their appearances.

Did you know Texas was the first state to plant flowers along the highway?

The Wildflower Program was created in 1932 not only to beautify your commute, but also to stabilize soil, provide reliable ground cover, and reduce maintenance and litter along roadways.

TxDOT sows about 30,000 pounds of wildflower seeds annually in observation of the program. The flowers also allow workers to mow along the highways less frequently, which provides habitats for 900+ animal species.

These efforts were lauded by Lady Bird Johnson, who provided grants to TxDOT for its work and spearheaded the Highway Beautification Act of 1965 to help make the initiative more widespread across the nation.

West Loop Trail, Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center, 1206 FM1382, Cedar Hill

Lake Grapevine Horseshoe Trail, 2700 Dove Rd., Grapevine

Though technically a mountain biking trail, hikers are welcome on this ~4.5-mile, mostly shaded loop. Follow Loop A to begin and end at the trailhead.

Looking back on Carrie Marcus Neiman: the founder behind the iconic department store

After lots of back and forth, debates, and pleading, Saks Global announced it is sticking with its decision to close the flagship Neiman Marcus store.

While we say goodbye to a store where many Dallasites got their prom dresses, set up wedding registries, or drooled over the Zodiac Room’s popovers, there’s one person we should also recognize: its founder, Carrie Marcus Neiman.

Carrie, along with her husband Al Neiman and brother Herbert Marcus, opened their first store in 1907. Carrie was largely lacking in formal education, but her vast knowledge of European fashion (her parents emigrated from Germany) led to immediate success as it blazed the trail into ready-to-wear luxury clothing.

The three ran the store together until 1928 when Carrie and Al divorced after he famously cheated on her. Her brother Herbert bought out Al’s shares of the company and then Carrie continued to rise.

She became a hallmark of fashion in Dallas as it transformed into a wealthy town following the oil boom, and was regularly sought out for fashion and etiquette advice.

Carrie served as chair of the Neiman Marcus board until her death in 1953.

Dallas Blooms flower festival begins to bud

Spring is nearly here — ready to do some frolicking?

The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden’s annual Dallas Blooms flower festival is just beginning to blossom. And with more than 500,000 tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and cherry blossoms, the biggest flower festival in the southwest is sure to be unbe-leaf-able.

Here are some quick need-to-know tips if you’re already daisy-dreaming.

The festival runs through Sunday, April 13 with other mini events like the Food and Wine Festival sprinkled throughout the schedule.
This year’s theme is “Outside the Ordinary” and features Seward Johnson’s hyper-realistic bronze statues, along with the Arboretum’s tallest ever installation “Crossing Paths” that stands 20 ft. tall.
