What’s on the ballot?

Voters will select for federal offices including the president, senators, and US representatives, but several state-wide and local seats will also be up for grabs. In Dallas County, this includes:
  • Railroad Commissioner
  • State Senators in districts 12, 16, and 23
  • State Representatives in districts 100-115
  • Texas Supreme Court Justices in districts 2, 4, and 6
  • State Board of Education members in districts 11 + 12

In addition to local offices, Dallas residents will vote on a handful of city propositions. These include:
  • Proposition C: Increases the mayor’s annual salary to $110,000 + councilmembers’ annual salaries to $90,000. Salaries would be subject to additional growth equal to inflation.
  • Proposition E: Limits City Council members from running for City Council again after four two-year terms + limits the mayor from running again after serving two four-year terms.
  • Proposition L: Establishes the Office of the Inspector General. City Council would be charged with appointing an Inspector General and naming the duties of the office.
  • Proposition T: Compels the city to complete a city-commissioned Community Survey annually, with a minimum of 1,400 residents’ responses on quality of life issues. The results of the survey would result in either additional compensation or termination for the city manager.

Hurricane Milton made landfall on the western coast of Florida as a Class 3 hurricane, impacting millions. Since then, we’ve seen efforts from all across the state to lend a helping hand.

Volunteer efforts

Texans on Mission, a Dallas-based group, sent 24 volunteers to assist in Tampa, offering food, water, shelter, generators, showers, and laundry units. They plan to do roughly 20,000 meals per day.

“With a storm of this magnitude, we anticipate people will be reeling and we want to begin meeting needs quickly,” stated Mickey Lenamon, chief executive officer for Texans on Mission.

Meanwhile, they also have volunteers assisting with Hurricane Helene relief. You can donate online to support both causes.

State efforts

Gov. Greg Abbott also deployed a variety of state agencies to Florida for a range of operations.

“Texans understand firsthand the importance of hurricane preparedness, and we will continue to support our fellow Americans as they brace for this hurricane,” Abbott stated in a press release.

These efforts from the governor include:
  • 180+ Texas State Troopers and other law enforcement personnel with highly equipped command vehicles and helicopters.
  • Aircraft (Blackhawks and Chinooks) from the Texas National Guard for search and rescue efforts.
  • A team of expert rescue swimmers from Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service.

By the numbers

According to a recent report from Texas A&M Transportation Institute, a trip that would take 20 minutes without traffic takes...
  • 26 minutes with traffic
  • 28 minutes in the peak direction
  • 36 minutes to plan for a punctual arrival

When is the worst time to drive?

Traffic is at its worst between 4 and 5 p.m. on weekdays. In the morning, 7-8 a.m. can also be dicey.

But the hands-down worst time to commute? 4 p.m. on a Friday. 3.2% of the area’s weekly delay happens around then.

When is the best time to drive?

Technically, that would be around midnight. But if you work a nine-to-five, here’s our advice:
  • Head to work by 7 a.m. or wait until 9 a.m.
  • If you can leave work early, head out by 3 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 2 p.m. on Fridays.

Commuters lost an average of 69 hours to congestion in 2024, according to a new Texas A&M report — up 4% from last year.

By the numbers

According to a recent report from Texas A&M Transportation Institute, a trip that would take 20 minutes without traffic takes...
  • 26 minutes with traffic
  • 28 minutes in the peak direction
  • 36 minutes to plan for a punctual arrival

When is the worst time to drive?

Traffic is at its worst between 4 and 5 p.m. on weekdays. In the morning, 7-8 a.m. can also be dicey.

But the hands-down worst time to commute? 4 p.m. on a Friday. 3.2% of the area’s weekly delay happens around then.

When is the best time to drive?

Technically, that would be around midnight. But if you work a nine-to-five, here’s our advice:
  • Head to work by 7 a.m. or wait until 9 a.m.
  • If you can leave work early, head out by 3 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 2 p.m. on Fridays.

Cris & John’s new space has entered its soft opening phase, marking a new era for the eight-year-old restaurant. The fusion eatery recently closed its original location on Preston Oaks Road.

Texano Cocina made its debut in the former El Fenix space at Lemmonwood Shopping Center. The new concept’s menu blends Mexican and Texan flavors, with lunch combos priced between $12 and $14. A patio, expanded menu, and remodeled dining area + bar are also in the works.

The folks behind Mi Cocina are opening an extension of the once-secret-ish Monkey Bar with this rooftop hang. Located on top of the Tru by Hilton Dallas Market Center, Monkey Bar on 9 opens Friday, June 13 with tequilas, margaritas, cocktails with fresh-pressed juice, and a variety of snacks.

Sweet Paris Crêperie & Cafe, 8701 W. University Dr. #100, McKinney | Cafe

Located inside The Statler Dallas hotel, Overeasy’s lunch menu begins at 11 a.m. If you’re an early riser, though, the breakfast menu is worth it — try the lemon ricotta pancakes.

Bread Winners Cafe, Multiple locations | Hours vary
Grab a warm cinnamon roll or brunch tots for the table while perusing the menu of breakfast tacos, scrambles, waffles, and more at this popular brunch location.

GoldRush Cafe, Lower Greenville | Tuesday-Saturday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
Family owned and operated since 1980, GoldRush Cafe offers delicious breakfast all day long in a cozy, comfortable setting.

The Biscuit Bar, Deep Ellum | Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. + Friday-Sunday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
If biscuits are your thing, The Biscuit Bar will butter ‘em. Choose from a variety of biscuit sandwiches, or keep it simple with a plain buttermilk biscuit. Bonus: Bring your furry friend to the dog-friendly patio.

The Finch, Lower Greenville | Hours vary
Indulge in a delicious, meaty brunch with options like short rib hash, brunch tacos with smoked bacon, or wagyu chicken fried steak.

Coupes, Oak Lawn | Sunday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Coupes Champagne Bar is now serving up a weekend brunch — you know the mimosas are gonna be good.

Encina, Bishop Arts District | Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
The blue corn pancakes are a must-have during Encina’s weekend brunch. Try the “Cactus Jill” drink for a unique non-alcoholic beverage.

Jonathon’s, Multiple locations | Hours vary
Both Jonathon’s locations feature packed weekend brunch menus complete with $5 mimosas. Pro tip: Be prepared to wait — Jonathon’s does not accept reservations.

Meddlesome Moth, Design District | Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
This classic Dallas brunch spot has something for everyone. We recommend the “Bad-Ass Bacon Waffle” + “Mother and Child Reunion.”

State & Allen, Uptown | Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
$5 mimosas + bloody marys, tiramisu french toast, and pulled pork huevos rancheros are a few menu items you’ll find at State & Allen.

Ellen’s, Multiple locations | Hours vary
Order the “Pancake Pot Pie” at this breakfast spot for a layered dish of pancakes, maple cream sausage gravy, bacon, sausage, hash browns, eggs, and cheese — a full brunch in one order.

Roy G’s, Oak Lawn | Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Brunch the morning away at this neighborhood bar with mimosa towers and a large menu full of classics, like the buttermilk short stack, and unique items, like the french toast breakfast sandwich.

The Rustic, Uptown | Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Enjoy family-style brunch for $17.95 per person with an assortment of cheese and crackers, toast, eggs, cheese and potato hash, hot chicken, and more.

The banana pancakes, vegan enchiladas rancheros, and chicken and waffles — among other delicious eats — make this brunch menu one for the books. Feeling fancy? Try the caviar.

Crown Block, Downtown | Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
Make a reservation and get dressed up for a Sunday brunch with skyline views at this local steakhouse. An $80 set fee — $40 for children under 12 — will give you access to one of ten plated entree options and a brunch buffet.

Knox Bistro, Highland Park | Saturday-Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
Head to this French brasserie for a brunch full of delicious eats, like the Croque Monsieur or pain au chocolat. Feeling full afterwards? Take a brief stroll on the nearby Katy Trail after eating.

The Mansion Restaurant, Oak Lawn | Saturday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Step into the Rosewood Mansion and make your way to the restaurant for a cozy, intimate, elevated brunch. Make sure you try one of the pastries.

Ida Claire, Addison | Daily, hours vary
Enjoy southern brunch delicacies like crawfish corn beignets, a low country breakfast, or Nashville hot tenders. Pro tip: Make a reservation to dine inside of the airstream.

The Old Monk, Lower Greenville | Saturday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Enjoy brunch on the cozy bar patio. We recommend the “Traditional Breakfast” with eggs, pub brunch potatoes, and your choice of toast, bagel, or English muffin. Bonus: Vegetarian bacon or sausage is available here.

Step out onto the 2,500-sqft dog-friendly patio for brunch cocktails and plates ranging from Texas steak Benedicts to the “Hangover Skillet.”

This scratch kitchen serves up vegan and vegetarian bites from its plant-based menu, like the “Eat Your Veggies Panini” and vegan street tacos. If you’re visiting with omnivorous friends, the “Spicy Bacon Ciabatta” was voted best breakfast sandwich in Texas in 2022.

Company Cafe, Lower Greenville | Monday-Friday, 6 a.m.-2 p.m. + Saturday-Sunday, 6 a.m.-5 p.m.
Company Café provides menu items for everyone, from gluten free and vegan crepes to gluten free biscuits, a veggie scramble, and vegan tacos.

Sundown at Granada, Lower Greenville | Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Grab bites on the rooftop patio on a nice day and enjoy the various gluten free and vegetarian items on the menu. Vegans will find a few more vegan options on the lunch menu.

Snooze, an A.M. Eatery, Multiple locations | Hours vary
Check out the “plant power” menu at this breakfast spot for veggie-friendly options like the tofu scramble and “Bountiful Buddha Bowl.”

Origin Kitchen + Bar, Oak Lawn | Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. + Sunday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
This spot focused on local and fresh ingredients provides several gluten-free options — like the GF fried chicken and paleo waffle — and welcomes menu modifications.

Seven Mile Cafe, Multiple locations | Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-2 pm. + Saturday-Sunday, 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
With a few locations that are a bit further out, Seven Mile denotes which menu items can be made vegan — spoiler alert, it’s quite a few. We’re dying to try the vegan loaded potatoes or the “berry vegan dream french toast.” The menu also features a few gluten-free items.

Dream Cafe, Uptown | Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. + Saturday-Sunday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
Choose from various gluten-free and vegan options — including a totally separate gluten-free menu. Pro tip: Let the kids order “Dragon Soda,” the cafe’s version of a Shirley Temple.
